Small town life in South Carolina is all about neighborhoods filled with real families. Nothing could be finer than gathering with friends and neighbors while meeting new friends. Festivals in our small towns are one of the best celebrations of our state and its great people and places.

We savor the season’s best with fall events which are especially delightful right now when the busy summer is gone and the weather is at its most perfect. Just what nature intended for pure enjoyment of the outdoors — a festival for weekend entertainment.

Festivals usually revolve around food. The centerpiece may be chicken bog, shrimp, oysters, crabs, barbecue, yams, you-name-it! If we don’t already have a festival especially for it, well maybe we’ll dream up a new one! The star of the show is only an excuse for the event of course, as vendors always offer additional tastes suitable for street food. What great opportunities for sampling dishes we would not (or could not) create at home!

Live entertainment showcases lots of local and regional talent with music and dance, sometimes with clowns and much more.

Unique arts and crafts exhibited at festivals also are  part of our celebration of the outstanding talent which we find throughout our state.

Almost every fall weekend brings a new opportunity, free or inexpensive to browse, especially for meeting people and enjoying the sights and sounds of our small towns. Winter and spring will bring even more opportunities for getting together too. Check our events category here often for suggestions of happenings.

How do you celebrate? What are your favorites? Anything special you want to know about our festivals or our small towns? Your comments and questions are invited!

My daddy used to whistle all the time….  I wish I could remember the songs he whistled…  Probably, “Nothing could be finer than to be in Carolina.”   I hear the birds sing every day (almost);  and I know they are whistling  just for me?????

I heard a whistle this past weekend in Augusta Mountain, Marion, NC.  A beautiful piece of land.     As we were crossing the mountain, I heard the whistle sound of the train… Not once but twice.  (I also learned that part of  “The Last of the Mohicans” was filmed right there on Augusta Mountain…A WOW, place!  I even saw the movie on tv last night.)  Website:  http://augustamountaintop.com/

I heard the whistle last week as I was meeting with my friend “Banana Jack” in Loris SC,  around noon.   He said that he heard the whistle just about everyday.  When his son is there with him, they would run down the street to see the train.  He owns www.wlscradio.com streaming country, gospel & bluegrass online.  Check it out! We’re planning a Bluegrass Saturday real soon!

It’s all about Railroads, transportation and the whistle stops across America?  And, did you hear that Warren Buffett had purchased some railroads?

“Red” Baldwin loved trains and the color red!  Lannie, his daughter and a good friend of mine, used to take him places to see and hear the sounds of the trains.  Maybe passenger trains will make a comeback?!  I’ve never ridden on a train.

Do you hear the sounds around you? Do you hear the music?  Do you hear the whistling sounds? Next time you hear a whistle, just stop and listen for a minute….Take a WOW break!

This doesn’t have anything to do with a whistle or does it!……….I’m going to Carolina in my mind” (James Taylor–another BIG favorite song writer of mine) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gic6B-B6rpg&feature=related Notice the very beginning….you won’t be surprised what he’s doing! I have to say, I’ve gone back and the utube versions goes away after a while and this version does not have the whistling–sorry.  It was really a good one.

THE SOUNDS OF CAROLINA  and “Whistles” are another reason to CELEBRATE South Carolina!
